WHAT IS AN AU PAIR?
The “Au Pair” concept came about in the 18th century in Switzerland. It was very common for upper class families to send their daughters to live with another family in a region of the country where a different language was spoken. They would look after the family´s children and would learn the family´s native language, gaining cultural experiences along the way. The phrase Au Pair, which means “on a par” or “equal to”, makes reference to the concept of cultural exchange, and was used for the first time in France in the 19th century to describe English girls who came to look after the children of French families in exchange for help with learning the French language and French customs.
Nowadays the word Au Pair describes someone who comes to live temporarily with a family of a different nationality in exchange for looking after the family´s children and assisting with household tasks associated with the children. They are treated as just another member of the family, and they receive an amount of pocket money as remuneration for their work in the household (the amount of pocket money varies depending on the Au Pair programme). The majority of Au Pairs tend to be young people (between 18 and 28 years old), who love working with children and have experience caring for them. Many have recently finished their secondary school education and are looking to have an exciting new experience and learn a new language before they start higher education.
THE AU PAIR PROGRAMME
There tends to be two different profiles of Au Pair candidates: those who choose shorter programmes of around 3-4 months in the summer, who tend to be university students looking to improve their language skills; and those who choose longer programme of around 12 months. Both kinds of candidates tend to have a basic knowledge of the language of their host country, and a very high/ native level in another language such as English, German, French etc.
By taking part in the Au Pair Programme, the host family receives help with both childcare, and with the education of their children in a foreign language. In exchange, the Au Pair benefits from the opportunity the integrate into a family of native speakers of their chosen language, allowing them to improve their language skills and their knowledge of the host country's culture.
The main objective of the Au Pair programme is to increase knowledge of foreign cultures and languages, both on the part of the Au Pair and on the part of the host family. It also gives young people the opportunity to travel and broaden their mind, without having to spend an excessive amount of money. For many candidates, participation in the Au Pair Programme will greatly contribute to their maturity and independence, as this will be the first time that they will live and work outside of their home country.

¿QUÉ ES UNA AU PAIR?
El concepto “au-Pair” nació en el siglo XVIII en Suiza. Era muy común para familias de clase social alta mandar a sus hijas a vivir con otra familia y cuidar a los niños de esta familia en otra parte del país, en una región donde se hablaba otro idioma. El objetivo de esta costumbre fue que las chicas aprendieran otro idioma y ganaran experiencias interculturales
La palabra “au-Pair” significa “a la par” o “igual a” haciendo referencia al “intercambio cultural” y se usó por primera vez en Francia en el siglo 19 para chichas que llegaron desde Inglaterra a Francia y se quedaron con una familia francesa para enseñarles inglés a los niños de esta familia. En cambio, las chicas inglesas aprendieron hablar francés y las costumbres francesas.
Au pair, es una palabra francesa, usada para denominar a la persona de otra nacionalidad acogida temporalmente por una familia a cambio de un trabajo auxiliar, como cuidar a los niños y ayudar en las tareas relacionadas con los niños; suele convivir con la familia receptora como un miembro más, y recibe una pequeña remuneración o dinero de bolsillo que dependerá del programa Au Pair que se haya acordado entre la familia y el/la Au-Pair; en la mayoría de los casos son jóvenes entre 18 y 28 años
a los que les gustan los niños y han trabajado en el cuidado de éstos y que después de obtener su educación superior y antes de iniciar sus estudios universitarios desean disfrutar de una experiencia en el extranjero y aprender un idioma haciendo lo que mejor saben hacer, cuidar niños.
Hay dos perfiles diferentes de Au Pair, los que vienen a pasar largas estancias y los que vienen en verano, para estancias cortas de hasta 3 o 4 meses que suelen ser ya estudiantes universitarios que quieren mejorar sus conocimientos en el idioma del país de acogida. En ambos casos, suelen disponer de conocimientos básicos del castellano y de un nivel muy alto en otros idiomas como el inglés, alemán, francés entre otros…
Con el programa Au-Pair las familias españolas disponen de ayuda en el cuidado de sus hijos a la vez que en la enseñanza de un idioma extrajero y los jóvenes extranjeros, los “Au-Pair”, se benefician de la oportunidad de residir e integrarse en una familia mejorando sus conocimientos del castellano y de la cultura y costumbres españolas.
El objetivo del au-Pair es el conocimiento de una lengua y de una cultura diferente. Muchos jóvenes quieren mejorar sus conocimientos de idioma a través de una estancia au-Pair. También es una oportunidad para viajar a otros países y conocer otras culturas, sin tener gastos muy altos. Para muchos jóvenes la experiencia au-Pair es la primera vez que viven y trabajan fuera de su país, por lo que esta experiencia Au-Pair apoya el proceso de madurez e independencia.
